UCL: What I told Messi after PSG’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid – Xavi

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez confirmed that he spoke with Lionel Messi after Paris Saint-Germain crashed out of the Champions League to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Leading 2-0 on aggregate with 30 minutes remaining, PSG lost their intensity, allowing Real Madrid to capitalise on some of their serious errors with Karim Benzema scoring a hat-trick under 17 minutes.

Messi and Xavi spent many years playing together in Barcelona and both men share a good relationship.

Xavi said after Real Madrid roared back to defeat PSG 3-2 on aggregate, he was quick to send his friend a message, reminding him that that is part of football.

“I have a friendship with Messi and I sent him some simple encouragement and nothing else,” Xavi told his pre-match press conference ahead of a clash with Osasuna.

“It is part of football, when it seemed like it was going well for PSG, Real Madrid showed up and turned it around.”

“The Champions League is like that. When you lower your intensity, your rival can get past you.
